World Cup 2022 England vs USA Tips and Predictions

England’s second Group B encounter sees them take on the USA at the Al Bayt Stadium on November 25th.

Although the Three Lions have previously dropped points against this opposition (2010), the nature of their opening performance on Monday would suggest that this current squad is unlikely to suffer the same fate.

The USA have tended to fare well at this stage of the tournament and Gregg Berhalter’s side put in a decent performance against Wales on Monday evening. They were under the cosh during the second half, however, they showed quality on the break and could be dangerous going forward.

• These two teams are fairly familiar foes. They’ve faced one another on several occasion, although the aforementioned 1-1 draw at the 2010 World Cup was their last competitive clash.
• England – England games were fairly entertaining to follow during the 2018 World Cup with 12 goals scored and eight conceded. They ended their Nations League campaign with a hugely entertaining 3-3 draw. They failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five Nations League matches too.
• USA – USA failed to score in either of their two warm-up matches and although they found the net against Wales, Gregg Berhalter must find a way to improve his side’s attacking potential. A lot will depend on the fitness of whether the lively Timothy Weah can stretch the England defence. 

Although there were a couple of lapses in concentration against Iran, England looked far too efficient going forward and always looked like creating chances throughout the 90 minutes. USA will offer a threat, however, England also have plenty of quality on the bench and can change the game in the second half, if required.

ENGLAND WIN

England’s defence has been fairly reliable throughout 2022, however, they have looked shaky towards the latter part of the year. They were opened up twice by Iran and many Three Lions’ fans find it hard to trust Harry Maguire.

BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

USA are dangerous going forward, however, they struggled to cope with Keiffer Moore in their opening Group B encounter with Wales. Although England don’t possess such an obvious battering ram in their squad, they do possess plenty of clever players in their squad, who could prove too hot to handle for Tim Ream and co.

ENGLAND TO WIN AND OVER 2.5 GOALS

England

England will be once again turning towards Harry Kane for a source of goals at this tournament. The Spurs frontman somehow failed to find the net on Monday despite England scoring six times.

Key Players: Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham

Team News: Gareth Southgate must choose between Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden. The former was excellent on Monday and is likely to retain his place in the XI.

USA

The USA have several dangerous players, however, they are particularly well-stocked in midfield where Christian Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson will be both be competing for a starting berth.

Key Players: Christian Pulisic. Timothy Weah

Team News: USA picked up a few knocks on Monday night with Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah both hobbling off. They will both be assessed ahead of this. Luca de la Torre should now be fully fit and ready to play some part.

Predicted Lineups: Matt Turner, Antonee Robinson, Walker Zimmerman, Sergino Dest, DeAndre Yedlin, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, Brenden Aaronson, Christian Pulisic, Timothy Weah, Josh Sargent. .

England are odds-on to win this contest, but they still look extremely tempting here. The USA played well for parts of their 1-1 draw with Wales, however, this will be a much tougher assignment for the USMNT and they are likely to fall short.
